Community Offices are unique to the some high schools of the Lester B. Pearson School Board. Each one plays a slightly different role according to the specific needs of the school. Here at BHS, the major areas of activity are in:

  • Community Service

  • Scholarship Information

  • Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre, National Student Commonwealth Forum, other leadership opportunities, etc.

  • Liaison with teachers and parent volunteers and the West Island Community.

  • Special programs such as Peer Mediation, Changes and Choices, Risk Behaviour Workshops

  • Charitable fundraising, Global Awareness, Role of Spiritual, Guidance and Community Animator.

  • Coordination of International Development Program, enabling senior students to volunteer and immerse themselves in another culture (2007 trip to Costa Rica, learning Spanish, living with Spanish families; 2008 potential trip to South or Central America in planning stages).

The aim of this program is to involve as many students as possible in volunteer activities, both in the school community and throughout the West Island. This helps them grow and develop their self esteem while helping others. Students work in many programs at the Lakeshore General Hospital, with the intellectually handicapped through WIAIH, and a wide variety of programs for senior citizens. As well, they help with the after-school programs in the elementary schools, at the Daycare Center and with fundraising for various charities, including cancer research, UNICEF, the Terry Fox Run, Splash and Dash for the Montreal Hospital “Sarah Cook Fund”, The CURE Denim Day fundraiser and the Poppy Campaign Day for Veteran’s Day. Students organize two seniors' teas per year, when local senior citizens visit and are entertained by our fellow students. Other areas of volunteering are at Blood Donor clinics, City Of Beaconsfield and Kirkland activities, and Christmas Baskets through the Volunteer Bureau.

Global Awareness is also one of our main activities that many students join. Students who are interested in learning more about global issues and who are committed to our current Malawi fundraisers meet on a weekly basis to plan and implement activities.

For more information, or information on how parents can volunteer, please contact Nancy Dubuc at the school or at ndubuc@lbpsb.qc.ca
