Programs of Study
Our dedication to meeting the diverse needs of our student
population has been our impetus for the development of several
unique academic programs. For the highly-motivated student, we are
pleased to provide accelerated and more challenging experiences
through our Cycle One Enrichment Program, along with Enrichment by
subject at the Cycle Two level.
Discovery Science is a new program that is part of the enriched
program at the Secondary One level. The Discovery Science program is
an accelerated science & technology program that provides the
students with the opportunity to experience how science & technology
are used in the real world. Students apply their learning to real
life situations through workshops, field trips and guest speakers.
On a regular basis each student will participate in a hands-on
application of what they just learned in the classroom.
BHS also offers strong academic immersion and regular English
programs at all levels, as well as a groundbreaking alternative
program known as Embarkations,
which is renowned for its successes with disenfranchised youth.
Augmenting these course offerings are a wide range of special
programs covering Visual Arts, Drama, Dance, Music, Physical
Education and Computer Technology.
BHS embraces the philosophy of the Quebec Education Program which
calls for an “integration of all subjects into a coherent whole,
focused on the major issues of contemporary life.”
Extra Curricular Activities
Led by high-energy staff members who invest an enormous amount of
time in coaching and motivating the students, our interscholastic
sports program can boast of at least twenty teams participating in a
wide variety of sports. Over 250 students take advantage of this
opportunity to play for our championship teams. In addition to
sports, we have an exceptional Music Program that features concert,
stage and jazz bands. Almost 400 students participate in our award
winning music program. Concerts are held twice a year, at Christmas
and in the spring. Physical fitness is emphasized not only through
our regular physical-education classes but also in our Sports
Fitness and Sports Leadership Programs in Cycle 2. Our Leadership
Program, Student Council, Yearbook, and Graduation Committees teach
the students how to take on responsibility within meaningful
activities in the area of Student Life.
Community Involvement
Students are taught from the moment they enter BHS that community
outreach and involvement in volunteer activities are important
elements of the school’s culture. Working with our Community
Officer, students are encouraged to volunteer for a wide range of
events, institutions and fundraising activities – from helping out
at the Lakeshore General Hospital or W.I.A.I.H. programs for the
intellectually handicapped, to raising thousands of dollars for
cancer research through the Terry Fox Run. Students organize social
events for senior citizens, help out at elementary after-school
programs, daycare centers, blood donor clinics, municipal special
events, and much, much more!
Special Programs
Success for all is a reality at BHS, where our extensive Resource
Program serves to highlight and support the individual educational
requirements of students from Grade 7 to Grade 11. Individual
Education Plans are drawn up for our special needs students,
supported by the Resource Team and staff at the school level, and by
Student Services at the Board level. Special needs students are
fully-integrated into the regular classroom with the proper level of
assistance from the Resource Team. A full-time counselor is
available for academic, vocational and personal counseling, and our
students also have access to the services of a social worker,
psychologist, nurse and behaviour technician.
Governing Board
Involvement of all the stakeholders is vital to the success of every
school. We are proud of the cooperative spirit in which the BHS
community participates in the proceedings of the
Governing Board. Bringing together the
expertise of parents, teachers, professionals, support staff,
students and community representatives, the BHS governing board
oversees and steers many of the school’s activities, providing
important feedback to the administration. Parents who are interested
in active involvement in the life of the school are encouraged to
run for election in the September.
