Embarkations Program

Who we are:

Embarkations is an alternative learning programme designed to meet the needs of students who for one reason or another are having difficulty succeeding in the regular classroom. Committed Students will be rewarded with a staff that will provide a co-operative learning environment where the qualities of productivity, initiative, honesty and personal responsibility will be valued. The programme is staffed by Marie Gribbon and Lesley Bobeldijk, and Theresa Bingham all of whom are dedicated to their profession.

Our goals:

  • To provide students with a programme that allows them to fulfill their academic requirements for a high school diploma.

  • To prepare students for the next step in their future, be it CEGEP, Trade School or the workforce.

  • To help students develop a positive image of themselves and the world around them.

  • To enable students to develop to their fullest potential.

Programme Description:

Embarkations operates a little like an old fashioned, one-room school house. Secondary 4 and 5 students share a workroom on the third floor of BHS. This workroom is self-contained; the student’s lockers, the teacher’s office, a kitchen, student work-tables and a full complement of computers are all housed here.

The programme offers all of the core subjects: English, French, Math, Science, History, as well as several credit courses including Career Choice, Work-Study, Physical Education, Word-Processing and Study Skills.

Students in Embarkations are able to earn more than the necessary 54 credits to graduate high school. Their report cards do not reflect that they have attended an alternative programme since they are completing the exact same curriculum offered in regular classes.

Embarkations students do not follow a regular time-table – we do not answer to the bells except for homeroom and lunch-time and of course fire drills! Formal classes are as brief as possible to allow for more time spent working on assignments and one-on-one attention from the teaching staff.

All assigned work must be completed and submitted before a student is allowed to leave for the day. The three teachers in Embarkations work on a staggered schedule so the classroom is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm daily. When assignments are completed to the satisfaction of the teachers, students may ‘sign out’. Once a student has signed-out they must leave the school property immediately.

In Secondary 5 some students may experience a reduced course load and as such will be required to find part-time employment (a minimum of 2 days per week) in the second semester of their graduating year.

Warning System:

Embarkations students are expected to follow a strict code of behaviour at all times. When a student applies, they are informed of the rules and expectations that go along with acceptance into the programme. Warnings are given out when a student breaks a rule or when their behavior is deemed unacceptable.

Each successive warning carries more severe consequences which include time spent working around the classroom and/or school (clean-ups) as well as conferencing with parents to try to bring about the proper behaviour.

When a student has accumulated four warnings, they are asked to leave the programme. Although these students are not eligible to reintegrate into the regular programme at BHS, an educational plan is put into place to aid the student to complete their secondary education. One of the priorities of the teaching staff is to help Embarkations student achieve their goals. Students who leave the program are always welcome to return for aid in making further academic plans.

Benefits:

  • Smaller class sizes
  • More individual attention
  • Assigned work completed at school - fewer homework wars with parents
  • Career Choice guest speakers and job skills training
  • Physical Education Trips to Voyageur Provincial Park (by bike) and to Mont Sainte Anne to ski – each trip is three days in length
  • Day trips and group team-building activities
  • Possibility of early graduation for qualifying students
  • A relaxed workroom – within a strict rule structure
  • Access to a kitchen – students may eat at any time
Application Process:

Students who are presently in Secondary 3 or 4 and who have been a student at BHS for the year prior to application may apply for the programme. Any applications made are for the following school year, as only students on the waiting list will be accepted into the programme after the start of the school year and before the end of September.

It is mandatory for an interested student to present themselves to one of the staff in the Embarkations classroom (C318) and ask for an application form.

Applicants are asked to read an information booklet about the programme, fill in a questionnaire and provide a copy of their most recent report card as well as a recent photograph of themselves. Once these items have been returned, an interview with the student is scheduled.

Students must show that they are academically capable to be considered for this type of programme. For this reason, students may be given conditional acceptance pending final report cards in June – or even Summer school results in August. Further conditions may need to be addressed on an individual basis.

Embarkations accepts approximately twenty-five new students each year. These positions are split between students coming from Secondary 3 and students applying from Secondary 4.

Fees:

The fee for Embarkations is $480 and is paid in four installments throughout the school year. The fees pay for all fieldtrips including the Phys. Ed. camping and skiing trips, general school supplies – paper, duo tangs etc., computer maintenance, and a special end of year dinner in June.

Embarkations and BHS:

Although Embarkations is rather independent from BHS, we are still a part of the school community. Students are encouraged to participate in school activities, sports teams, band programmes, and trips. They are also expected to follow all school rules that apply to the regular BHS student. Lunch-time is shared so Embark students are able to socialize with their friends in the regular programme.

Success Rate:

Embarkations has a proven track record. The programme has been serving the needs of BHS students for over fifteen years and has celebrated the graduation of hundreds of students. The graduation rate for Embarkations students is very high. Students who do not graduate from the programme are always assisted in creating a plan that will give them the credits they need to either apply to CEGEP or to a trade school.

Testimonials:

“Recently I had the pleasure of watching the second of my two children walk up to the stage at Beaconsfield High School and accept his diploma.

It was my daughter who first came to me over four years ago and told me about an alternative school program within BHS, a program that is able to exist because of the support of the principal, all the teachers and support staff. It is also a program that the student alone must apply for and pass an interview. Commitment on the part of the student is key.

Embarkations was created for the student who for a variety of reasons is not able to succeed in a regular classroom environment. Teachers Marie Gribbon, Lesley Bobeldijk and Theresa Bingham take 40 students from secondary 4 and 5 and teach them about responsibility, accountability, working as part of a team, independently and the stuff they need to move forward in their lives. Above and beyond the basic reading, writing and arithmetic that a high school leaving certificate represents, the students are also required to learn how to write a CV and hold down a part time job. With the help of the teachers, the students decide on a course of action for the future, like how to choose and apply to a CEGEP and beyond.

Today both my children attend John Abbott College with sights on university for the future. I am very proud of them both. I thank these three women in helping me teach and even at times to co-parent them and all the past, current and future students they will encounter.

Now I can say it. Thank you, Thank You”

“Embarks has changed my life. I was on a spiraling path to nowhere, and then I joined. Embarks prepared me for what goes on inside the school and out. This program taught me the importance of getting work done and teamwork.”

“Going into Embarkations, you may think that everything is going to be easy – no homework, getting out of school early everyday. Most likely that won’t be the case. To be in Embarks, you need to work hard and be determined. The past two years have helped me become more self-motivated and I’ve learned the importance of priorities. In the end, Embarkations is really worth all the hard work, I’ve met the high standards that I set for myself, for example, make the Honour Roll for the first time in my life.”

“Embarkations is a great program because it offers one on one student-teacher help. Students also establish great relationships with the teachers which motivates them to not only submit their work on time but also put some effort into the assignment. The biggest attraction by far is that the teachers are always there to help you which was not the case in regular stream. What truly made my Embarkations stay fun was the trips. The bike and ski trips were a blast and I will remember them deep into the future.”

“Embarks is the place to be. We have great teachers, great classmates and great field trips. The most fun I had was at the ski trip to Mont Sainte Anne. It was a crazy experience and I have a lot of good memories from there. As my friend ‘Joe Cool’ says ,”if you are snowboarding for the first time, use a pillow on our butt.” The teachers at Embarks are great; as long as you don’t get on their bad side, you’ll have a great year. Believe me when I write this, pass History before coming in, if you don’t…good luck. Embarks has changed the way I think about school. Join Embarks, because you can.”
